Which Restaurants Accept Apple Pay and Tap in Canada?
PayCheckr Team · April 8, 2026
Canada is one of the world leaders in contactless payment adoption. Tap-to-pay is the default at most retailers, and Apple Pay works almost everywhere that accepts contactless. But "almost everywhere" isn't the same as everywhere.
How Apple Pay Works at Restaurants
Apple Pay uses NFC (Near Field Communication) — the same technology behind tap-to-pay with your physical card. If a restaurant has a payment terminal that supports contactless payments, Apple Pay will almost certainly work there too.
At most Canadian restaurants, the server brings a wireless terminal to your table. You hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the terminal, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, and you're done. The tip is usually entered on the terminal before you tap.
Where It Gets Tricky
While the vast majority of Canadian restaurants now support contactless payments, there are still some situations where Apple Pay won't work:
- Older terminals: Some restaurants still use older payment terminals that only support chip-and-PIN or swipe.
- Cash-only establishments: A small number of restaurants, particularly some smaller family-run spots, still operate on a cash-only basis.
- QR code or app-based ordering: Some restaurants have moved to app-based payment systems where Apple Pay may or may not be an option within the app.
How to Check Before You Go
PayCheckr tracks Apple Pay and tap-to-pay acceptance alongside credit card and Amex data. When community members submit a report, they can indicate whether contactless/Apple Pay worked at that location. This gives you real, verified data rather than guessing from the outside.
Why Report Your Experience
Every report helps build a clearer picture. If you paid with Apple Pay at a restaurant, reporting it on PayCheckr takes a few seconds and helps the next person who's wondering if they need to bring their wallet or can just tap with their phone.
The more reports we have, the more reliable the data becomes for everyone. It's a small action that makes a real difference.
